What is a Mini Dachshund? A mini dachshund is also known a wiener dog or a sausage dog, is a small, long bodied, short legged dog originally bred for hunting badgers. The Dachshund originated in Germany and is considered the worlds “oldest breed of dog”, although this can’t be proved. The mini dachshund of today is not much more than a spoiled lap dog.

How big do Mini Dachshunds get?

Mini Dachshunds range in size up to 11 pounds. The height of a mini dachshund is approximately 5 to 7 inches tall.

What colors do Mini Dachshunds come in?

Mini Dachshunds come in a variety of colors. Our favorite is the blue and tan. Some of the other mini dachshund colors include cream, fawn, red, black and tan, and chocolate and tan. The mini dachshund does carry the merle, piebald or dapple gene. Whatever term you decide to use it sure is pretty.

Is it easy to groom a Mini Dachshund?

The mini dachshund has 3 coat types all are easy to groom. Here at Tri State Puppies, we raise long haired mini dachshunds. A bath, blow-dry, and brush out should be sufficient every 4 weeks. This breed can be stubborn, so we suggest starting your grooming routine as soon as possible to get your new puppy off to the right start. The other coat types for the mini dachshund are smooth and wire haired.

Is a Mini Dachshund healthy?

For the most part mini dachshunds are healthy. The most common issue is their back because they are long bodied and low to the ground. It is best to encourage them not to jump off the furniture or bed, instead get them a set of pet stairs. They have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, so they make a lifelong pet.

What is the temperament of a Mini Dachshund?

The mini dachshund are very loyal and loving companions.  Mini’s do require a lot of attention and love being held on your lap. They make a great watchdog. The mini dachshund makes an excellent apartment dog due to their small size, and do not require much exercise. Training will require patience because the breed can be hardheaded. This breed will benefit from early socialization.
